JW's are conditioned to think of the organization as their "mother". Let's face it - your boyfriend is a mama's boy. And to him, this mama holds the power of life and death over him. Your instincts are right on. Don't expect it to get any better. Fully expect it to get worse. I feel for the time you have invested with this guy. when i first started studying in 84 at the ripe ol age of 29, i was told oft and repeatedly that jws did everything in moderation, and nothing sinful or unbiblical.
apparently, like everything else, they have added footnotes to the scriptures that say not to get drunk, as that seems to be their only "legitimate" (read, unregulated) escape from the reality that is the witchtrowel babble and trash sectciety.. there was one elder in my first congregation that reeked of alcohol even first thing in the morning at field service.
i was told by someone "born in the truth" that he had a "body chemistry problem, whereby when he would sweat it would smell like alcohol, and he did sweat profusely...hence the reddenned face.

"Body Chemistry problem"....I heard that excuse used in my old Hall. The trouble is, that the one with the "body chemistry problem died of complications due to alcoholism shortly after. As an ex-elder, I've observed that it is the elders who can't get a handle on their drinking. Of course, that doesn't stop them from sitting in judgement for those who have a similar problem. One of my favorite "party buddies" would invite me over to get drunk and watch R rated movies. His
rationalization was that "drinking was a part of his culture"(french), and thus allowances could be made for him. I also just heard that he was recently removed.
Sadly, alcohol and food are the only escapes open to JW's. And lord knows, there's quite a bit to escape from

after talkin in chat tonight....it has got me and a friend talkin about whether marijuana should be legalised.. my view...yes, .
i) who has the right to tell me what to do with my own body?.
ii) alcohol is a legalised drug....each year more deaths occur through alcohol abuse than marijuana usage.. iii) people smoke it anyway and the question is not bein addressed.. iv) it's great to get stoned!!!
Marinol has been approved for use for years(generic dranabinol). One drawback is that it does not have the immediate effect that smoking does. I believe they are working on a form that it delivered through an inhaler, thus speeding the onset of action.

Your situation is akin to someone knowingly infecting another with a deadly disease. Sure, if you don't study with this person, someone else will...but you're the one who has to look yourself in the face every morning when you shave.(I'm assuming you do, as we know that all real JW's don't have beards<G>).
Can you live with the fact that you've destroyed another life?

today, april 20th, is the fourth anniversary of a very special day in my life.. the anniversary of my rebirth.. this rebirth was not a religious experience, but it was something totally pure, amazing and healing.. it had nothing at all to do with the society, or rather, of freeing myself from it.
it was however, a giant first step in that direction.. today is the fourth anniversary of the day i got letter that changed everything.
the words on the pages were alive, and magical: they released me from my old life and for the first time.

We've lots of similarities....alcoholic dad, time in the borg. At 39 I'd was at the end of my rope, desperately wanting out of the WT and the marriage from hell. I did make it out, bitter and dissilusioned. But like you, I realized I had a choice. Either let my pain cause me to wither and shut down, or make the decision to use it to open myself up, and finally start to live. I applaud your wisdom and fortitude at such a young age.

Many of my top ten have been covered. Other than Ray's books, the one that has had the most profound
influence on me is "Total Freedom- the essential Krishnamurti". I highly recommend it.
